Understanding the Sápmi climate

🌲 Inland climate (Karasjok, Kautokeino)

The Finnmark plateau has a markedly continental climate: very cold, dry winters and surprisingly warm summers. Karasjok is Norway’s cold pole, yet the mercury can still climb above +30°C in July. Large daily and seasonal swings.

🏞️ River valleys (Tana, Lakselv)

The great river valleys — the Tana and Lakselv rivers — bring slightly milder conditions than the plateau. Warm summer days and some of the world’s best salmon rivers. Winters are still cold and snowy.

☀️ Arctic light on the plateau

Midnight sun from late May to late July, and the dark season at midwinter. The dry, clear plateau skies offer some of the country’s best aurora conditions from September to March.
