Midnight sun, plateau and river life
When the dark season loosens its grip, SĂĄpmi is transformed. From late May to late July the sun does not set on the Finnmark plateau â it circles the sky and bathes the landscape in a golden, timeless light. The summer is short but intense, and a completely different experience from the dark winter.
The midnight sun makes the day lose its grip. You can fish at midnight in the brightest sun, hike whenever you like, and experience a calm that is hard to describe. The light is soft and warm, and the colours of the plateau â green, gold and purple heather â stand out vividly.
For many it is precisely this light that is the greatest experience of summer: a feeling that time stands still.
Summer is the high season for outdoor life. Inland fishing for char and trout is at its best, hiking on the plateau and in Stabbursdalen National Park offers endless space, and the birdlife in the wetlands is rich. The reindeer have had their calves, and the herds move towards cooler pasture.
Be aware that summer also means mosquitoes and gnats on the plateau and by the water â good repellent and covering clothing make the trip much better.
Prepare for mosquitoes
On the plateau and by the water, mosquitoes can be intense on still summer evenings. Bring good repellent, covering clothing and perhaps a mosquito net â then the midnight-sun trips are pure joy.
Combine long, bright days with fishing, hiking and cultural experiences in Karasjok and Kautokeino. The distances are large, but summer road conditions make driving easy â and you can stop wherever the light is finest.
A summer trip in SĂĄpmi pairs well with the Varanger coast: the plateauâs light and space inland, and the fjords and birdlife of the coast, complement each other.
