Endless sky, silence and light
The Finnmark plateau is one of Europeâs last great wildernesses â a vast plateau of tundra, birch forest, bog and countless lakes. It is large, silent and open, with a sky that seems to merge with the horizon. Here nature shapes life, and reindeer herding and SĂĄmi culture are part of the landscape.
A sea of plateau
The plateau covers large parts of Inner Finnmark and is Norwayâs largest mountain plateau. The landscape is fairly flat but never monotonous: rivers cut through, the lakes lie like mirrors, and the birch forest follows the valleys. In winter everything is covered in snow; in summer the tundra blooms and the bogs teem with birds.
The distances are large and settlement sparse. It is precisely the vast and untouched character that is the experience â you can drive a long way without meeting anyone, and the silence is total.

In winter the plateau is an eldorado for skiing, snowmobiling and dog sledding, with a large network of marked snowmobile trails. The dark season and clear skies give some of the countryâs best aurora conditions. In summer there is hiking, fishing in countless lakes, and a midnight sun that never sets.
The plateau demands respect: the weather turns fast, the distances are large, and coverage can be poor. Good planning and local knowledge make the trip safe â and unforgettable.

Plan and respect the weather
On the plateau, weather and visibility can change in minutes. Tell someone where you are going, check the forecast and conditions, and bring extra clothing, food and warmth. In winter: never ride a snowmobile alone without experience and the right equipment.
