✈️ How to get to Sápmi

6 min lesing

Flights, driving and long distances

Sápmi lies far to the north, but is easier to reach than many think. The journey is part of the experience: long distances, vast nature and a feeling of arriving in another world. Here are the main routes into Inner Finnmark.

By air

The nearest airport to Karasjok is Lakselv (Banak) in Porsanger, about an hour and a half’s drive away. For Kautokeino, Alta Airport is the most common gateway, around two and a half hours’ drive. Both airports have connections via Tromsø or Oslo.

Kirkenes Airport is an alternative from the east, but lies further from Inner Finnmark. A hire car is recommended from the airport — public transport on the plateau is limited.

By car

A car gives the greatest freedom in Inner Finnmark. From Alta you drive the E45 south to Kautokeino; from the coast you reach Karasjok via the E6 and county road. The roads are wide and well maintained, but the distances are large and settlement sparse.

In winter, studded tyres and good preparation are required. Fill up on fuel in the towns, check road conditions, and expect stretches that are remote and without coverage.

Winter driving and distances

On the plateau, petrol stations and houses are far apart. Fill the tank when you can, keep warm clothing and some food in the car, and check weather and conditions before long legs. In winter you should have studded tyres and drive according to conditions.

Tips

  • 🚗Book a hire car in advance — choice is limited in season.
  • ⛽Fill up in the towns; stations are far apart.
  • 🛣️Check road reports (Norwegian Public Roads Administration) before driving in winter.
  • ⏱️Leave a good margin — the distances take longer than the map suggests.
